Description

Based on HPL this is an alchemy/mysterious cult box.

"This box was inspired by Joseph Cornell, the artist who made shadowboxes and appealed to many people because he related a feeling of mystery and nostalgia rather than an actual clear purpose or message. Many of his works become other worldly or become artifacts in their own right. I was especially drawn to a box he made which was based on an Egyptian chest which would be given to someone one was courting. I really tuned into the mystery and the feeling of the boxes and that is what I wanted to make: an “artifact” that gave specific feelings.
This box is based on short stories by H.P. Lovecraft. When I was younger my Dad used to read my sister and I these stories. First of all I wanted this box to feel forbidden, mysterious and creepy. I intend it to be unclear and faraway feeling, and other worldly. One is not able to understand what the box really is, but there is enough of a presence of the unknown and forbidden so that the viewer understands how they feel about it.
It is clasped, and bound from being easily opened and the symbol on top is crudely scrawled like a warning. Opening it one can see the resemblance to an altar. The bottles are filled with materials I found in my house, but all give off mysterious and other worldly vibes: small colored glass pieces, feathers, seeds and leaves – white sea shells, foreign coins, and a single silver key. Red, burned down candles to emphasize the altar motif and give the feeling of the box having been used many times before. Lovecraft hated the ocean and fish, so the shells were appropriate. The Silver Key is one short story and a solitary key in a bottle gives purpose the key, rather than a collection of keys. Mirrors are often seen as portals as well as faraway and mysterious. The bottles are labeled in Arabic symbols. Also shown is an ancient Arabic astrological map on the roof of the box. Arabic being my choice because The Book of the Dead, The Necronomican, was said in the stories to be written by the Mad Arab."
